“I will go on a payment arrangement, and you will accept it!!!”

The misplaced sense of entitlement some debtors have is just incredible. Yesterday afternoon we were sent a debt to collect from a stationery provider- the debt was $1100, the invoice was due in mid December. I do my usual speil and the debtor proceeds to tell me how offended he is that he has been contacted by a debt collector over a bill that isn’t even 30 days old yet. I obviously explain that the clients terms are 7 days and she would have given him plenty of reminders and opportunities to pay, but he wasn’t having a bar of it. And I quote “Send me the bill and I will look at it on Monday and make an offer”. Hmmmm…….”An offer? Sorry what do you mean?”…….”I mean I will go on a payment plan which she has to accept, now stop bothering me, I am on holidays, if she wants her money, she will wait”. Now, smarmyness like that is like a red rag to a bull to me so I proceed to tell Mr Holidays that it doesn’t quite work like that and payment plans and generally only offered to people who can’t afford to pay the full amount, not arrogant smarta**es like this guy who can clearly afford to go on holiday. Obviously I didn’t say that to him, but by geez I thought it!
What happens next is anyone’s guess as he hung up, but I was just stunned at the audacity of some people. Rant over!
