Email read receipts- why they can be your best friend

Hi everyone, happy hump day! What I want to talk about today is what you should do when your customer acknowledges your attempts to contact them but doesn’t actually respond. It is frustrating as hell I am sure we can all agree. Your inner voice is screaming “I KNOW YOU’RE THERE!!!” The most effective tool I use to generate an acknowledgement is an email read receipt. There is an option in outlook where you can set it to automatically prompt the recipient of the email, but I find this blanket approach quite offensive and do not recommend it. I am sure your VIP customers, suppliers, family and friends, or even your boss wouldn’t appreciate the underlying tone of mistrust that comes with requesting a read receipt. But for debtors and customers who owe you money, absolutely use it. If you receive the read receipt back from them, but with no response, send them another email along these lines: “Thanks for the read receipt. I appreciate you acknowledging my attempts to discuss this debt with you and hope that given you went to the trouble of letting me know you’d received it, means that you want to do the right thing. If things are tough and you cannot pay the whole amount in one go, please just say so”. Another version of the read receipt is iMessage for iPhones, when you can see they’ve “read” your sms. Send them the above response and see how you go. I guarantee you will be surprised by the result! Cheers
