How to motivate the unmotivated!

We have all dealt with them- overtly compliant, apologetic and say all the right things, yet still only pay when they feel like it- yes I am talking about unmotivated customers. They make it so hard for you to hate them as you know deep down they want to do the right thing, but getting money out of them is like pulling teeth. They always take your calls and when you talk to them they have this uncanny ability to empathize with your position, saying things like “I know you want your money and I feel terrible that I can’t pay you, I would be doing the same thing”- GRRR!!!! Stop being so likeable!!! So what do you do? It is a very difficult situation to deal with- you can go the other way, demand they stop wasting your time and give them a 24 hour deadline to pay or get sued, but often this makes it worse and if they were unmotivated when you were being nice, they are going to be less motivated when you’re not. The key I find is this- explain to them that whilst you know they want to do the right thing, you cannot keep chasing them and unless they commit to an affordable repayment arrangement then and there, then it is likely to be out of your hands. Shift the blame- blame your systems, blame your processes, blame the automated nature of your business that escalates any outstanding debts that haven’t had payments in the last 7 days- whatever it is, create that urgency but do it in a nice way. In my experience, people are not bad- they are just bad with money. Apologetic and subservient people often deal well with deadlines- just make sure they are realistic but it is vital you follow through on what you threaten otherwise you just look like a fool. Cheers
