What to say on an invoice

Here at CollectMORE Debt Solutions, we are all for creating urgency and tight deadlines around payment, but an invoice that just came across our desk had this written on it: “Please make payment within 5 working days or legal action may be taken at your cost”. Now, I am not sure about anyone else, but that seems just a little extreme to me. It’s like killing a spider with a nuke. Or a cockroach with a shotgun. Each to their own though, and if this extreme stance works for this guy, then hats off to him, but I wouldn’t recommend this approach as all you will do is offend the customer, lose any future business from them and it may even have the opposite effect and they will intentionally not pay just to see if you do follow through on your threat. The punishment must fit the crime- if you are going to have a clause on your invoice, then make sure it is appropriate- this is my favourite and the most effective I have ever seen “Please make payment in full by the due date as our terms are very strict however this approach allows us to focus on providing a superior product and service which we trust you have received in this instance. Thank you”
